Preventing Winter Fish Kill in Your Pond

Most winter fish loss comes down to oxygen. Here’s why it happens under the ice, and how aeration helps prevent it.

Losing fish over winter is heartbreaking, and usually preventable. The culprit is rarely the cold itself. It’s a lack of oxygen under the ice.

Why oxygen runs low under ice

When ice and snow seal a pond and block sunlight, plants stop producing oxygen. At the same time, bacteria breaking down organic matter on the bottom keep consuming it. With no exchange at the surface, dissolved oxygen can fall to levels fish can’t survive.

How aeration helps

Winter aeration keeps a section of the pond ice-free, so oxygen can enter and harmful gases can escape. Rather than blasting cold water through the whole pond, the goal is gentle circulation that maintains that opening and keeps oxygen available where fish overwinter.

Keep an open hole in the ice with aeration.
Remove organic debris in fall so less oxygen is consumed over winter.
Avoid smashing the ice. That stresses fish; let aeration do the work.
